Top Ways to Save Money on Your Move

When you factor in a security deposit or home loan down payment, plus the cost associated with movers, supplies, turning on utilities, cable and internet hookup fees, increased fuel use, and possibly even a day or two off work, it all adds up to a lot of money. Moving is expensive, but that does not mean there are not a few things you can do to save money on your move.

  • Compare Movers – If you need to hire a mover, San Diego offers a lot of options, so do not just settle for the first one you stumble across. They all offer different rates and charge unique fees. Plus, there are times of the week, month, and year that are considered off-season and thereby cheaper.

  • Use Free Boxes – Did you know that you can get boxes for free from your local restaurants, bars, liquor stores, office supply stores, etc.? All you have to do is ask.

  • Get Creative with Moving Supplies – One of the easiest ways to save money during your move is to use moving supplies you have around the house. Plastic sandwich bags and twist ties can be helpful for keeping small things organized, while t-shirts, tanks, socks, towels, etc., are ideal for wrapping fragile objects or filling empty space in a box, so the contents inside do not jiggle.

  • Downsize – The less items you have to move, the less your move will cost. Now is the time to donate or sell everything you do not need.

  • Keep Receipts – One of the most important moving tips to keep in mind is to keep your receipts, if your move is job-related. You can deduct moving costs when you file your income taxes. You can find out if you qualify using IRS Publication 521.
