Purge, Pack, or Donate? All Three Are Great Before a Move

Once you officially know that you are moving, you should gather supplies and start packing right away. Remember that the earlier you start, the less stressful your move will be. If you do a little bit every day then you will not have to cram so much work into that final week. Of course, before you get started, you need to ask yourself whether you should purge, pack, or donate items. All three can be done, but do not make the mistake of only packing. The other two options will make your move easier, and potentially less expensive.

Purge and Donate Boxes

Take a couple of your moving boxes and label them as “purge” and “donate.” When you pack, really think about whether you want or need the item in your hand. If it is garbage, just throw it away. If you somehow have a dozen extra Tupperware lids, but no bowls to match, then get rid of them.

If items you are getting rid of are still in good condition, they should be donated. Things that you no longer have a need for could make a big difference elsewhere. Make sure everything you donate is clean and in working condition. Some charities will pick up donations from your home, so you do not even have to deal with packing them in the car and dropping them off.

Consider Selling

Purge, donate, and pack are three options before you move, but if you start going through things early enough, you could consider selling, too. Some stuff could be sold on Craigslist, or you could have a yard sale, if you have enough to get rid of. The money you make could pay for your moving services.
